Particle Baits

Particle baits are made up of beans, nuts & seeds, of which there is a wide variety to choose from. Most particles baits are used to attract fish to feed & are used in groundbait mixes, loose feed, or as part of a spod mix. Particles can be used successfully at whipping fish into a feeding frenzy as they become preoccupied in rooting out every last particle which becomes embedded in the debris on the bottom.

Many particles can be found in your local tackle shop which come prepared in a variety of different flavours, this certainly helps take the hassle out of preparing your own.

Preparing Particles

Preparation of particles baits is of the upmost importance, as some particles can increase in size when soaked in water which can prove lethal to a fish that has ingested large quantities of poorly prepared particles.

It is also important to note that the boiling process used during preparation is strictly adhered to, as it isn't just the particles swelling up which can cause harm to fish, it can be the naturally forming bacteria found on the particles themselves which can do harm when eaten, so it is important to kill these bacteria during the boiling process.

Once cooked it is also wise to store your prepared particles for a couple of hours in the water they were cooked with, this helps them take on the additional flavours which have leaked out during the boiling process.

If you want to store your particles for a prolonged period then a freezer can help, always make sure they are properly thawed before use. If particles begin to take on a sour aroma make sure they are discarded.

Simple Spod Mix

Spod mixes like most baits within an anglers armoury can be tweaked & changed for different venues and different fish. If you are new to using particles it's best to keep your mix as simple as possible & begin experimenting with different particles once your confidence grows. Below is a simple mix which uses hemp, corn, chilli flakes, tuna, pellets & boiled rice.
